As a full-time, dedicated street outreach organization, Bridge to the Mountains assists those living on the streets of Allegheny County in accessing and navigating available resources. At times, this can be as simple as obtaining a state ID, signing up for food stamps and medical insurance, or providing basic items needed for shelter and survival. It can be as complex as accompanying someone through the housing system from start to finish— completing an assessment with Allegheny Link, connecting to a housing program, and supporting the individual through the sometimes difficult transition of living indoors. We utilize a trauma-informed and humanistic approach, understanding humans as holistic individuals unique in our stories and capable of determining our own goals and behaviors.
Often, helping-organizations locate an “at-risk” community and enter it with an expertise, agenda, and hypothesis for change and betterment. Bridge to the Mountains, rather, seeks to meet people where and how they are. We are humbled to be welcomed into a beautiful community of individuals living life on the streets, and continue to learn from and listen to the voices of the people we encounter.
We are relationship focused— patiently forming bonds and friendships to both build and foster community and also address the needs and challenges presented in day to day life on the streets.
